The Oaklands Hotel, Norwich: A Great Wedding Venue With a Few Rough Edges

Venues & Reviews 2 September 2026 9 min read

The Oaklands Hotel is one of those places in Norwich that can be remarkably easy to drive past if you aren’t looking for it.

Sitting on Yarmouth Road in Thorpe St Andrew, just east of Norwich city centre, it’s set back from the road in its own grounds. The hotel describes itself as being around 1.5 miles from the centre of Norwich, while accommodation listings highlight its location close to the city, the River Yare and the Norfolk Broads. (Oaklands Hotel)

Once you’ve actually found the entrance, you head down a long driveway towards the main hotel.

And this is where our first impression wasn’t necessarily the best.

The arrival could be better

You could be forgiven for missing the entrance completely.

It seems to appear rather suddenly when you’re travelling along Yarmouth Road, particularly if you’ve never visited before.

Then there’s the drive itself.

On our visit, the long driveway towards the hotel was noticeably affected by potholes, making the journey up to the building considerably bumpier than you might expect when arriving at a wedding venue.

It’s hardly something that’s going to ruin anybody’s wedding day, but first impressions count — particularly when potentially dozens of guests are arriving at a venue they’ve never visited before.

The parking itself was perfectly usable, although it didn’t feel enormous to us. Other guests have actually been particularly positive about the hotel’s parking, with recent reviews describing it as plentiful and secure, so experiences may vary depending on how busy the hotel is when you visit. (Booking.com)

Once you reach the actual hotel, however, the experience improves considerably.

A warm and welcoming hotel

Walking into reception gives a much better impression.

The Oaklands has a comfortable, welcoming feel rather than the clinical atmosphere some larger hotels can have.

That seems to tally with the broader guest experience too. Current Booking.com ratings are particularly positive about the hotel’s location and staff, with guests frequently mentioning friendly service, comfortable surroundings and good value. (Booking.com)

The hotel isn’t pretending to be an enormous five-star luxury resort.

And actually, we don’t think it needs to.

There’s a relaxed atmosphere to the place which suits it.

The bedrooms are spacious — although not everything is perfect

Our impression of the accommodation was generally positive.

The rooms we saw were a decent size, nicely presented and perfectly pleasant places to stay. The standard beds also seemed comfortable, something echoed by plenty of recent guests. (Booking.com)

The sofa beds in the suites?

That’s a different matter.

Let’s just say we wouldn’t be rushing to volunteer to sleep on one.

If you’re booking suites for family members or members of the wedding party and intend to use the additional sofa-bed accommodation, it’s something we’d recommend trying or asking about beforehand rather than automatically assuming it’ll offer the same comfort as the main bed.

We also thought a little more signage around the accommodation areas could help.

When you’re familiar with a hotel, finding individual suites probably seems obvious. When you’ve just arrived, possibly carrying bags — or after you’ve spent several hours celebrating a wedding — a few extra signs pointing people in the right direction wouldn’t hurt.

And then there’s the water pressure

This was probably our biggest criticism of the accommodation itself.

The water pressure was noticeably poor.

And interestingly, this doesn’t appear to have been an isolated experience.

Several recent verified Booking.com reviews independently mention weak showers or poor water pressure, including reviews from April and June 2026. Another recent TripAdvisor review mentions plumbing issues during a stay in one of the suites. (Booking.com)

That doesn’t make the rooms unusable, but it does feel like an area where investment would noticeably improve the guest experience.

When you’ve got a hotel potentially full of people getting ready for a wedding, decent showers aren’t exactly a luxury.

The bar and restaurant are a real strength

Move downstairs and the Oaklands starts showing more of what it does particularly well.

The restaurant and bar areas are attractive, relaxed spaces and we found the food good, with a decent selection available.

Again, that’s something regularly reflected in current guest reviews. Recent visitors repeatedly praise the food and restaurant, while Booking.com scores the property well overall for facilities and value. (Booking.com)

There’s also outdoor terrace space, which gives the hotel another useful area when the weather cooperates. (Booking.com)

For an ordinary hotel stay, we’d probably describe the Oaklands as somewhere that’s generally good but has a few areas that could do with attention.

For weddings, though?

That’s where our opinion of the place goes up considerably.

The Oaklands knows how to host a wedding

This is the part that matters most for The Norwich Wedding Journal.

As a wedding venue, we think the Oaklands is very good.

And crucially, it feels like a venue that actually understands weddings, rather than simply being a hotel with a room that happens to be available for functions.

The hotel is licensed for wedding ceremonies and civil partnerships and promotes weddings ranging from intimate celebrations through to significantly larger events. Its wedding operation includes function spaces, landscaped gardens and flexible catering arrangements. (Oaklands Hotel)

But the part that particularly impressed us was the marquee.

Forget what you’re picturing when we say “marquee”

When somebody tells you their wedding reception is going to be in a marquee, you might immediately picture a large white tent sitting in a field.

That’s really not what the Oaklands space feels like.

Their marquee has a much more permanent, professional event-space feel to it.

The hotel itself describes it as one of its private event spaces, alongside its reception and function rooms. (Oaklands Hotel)

Once you’re inside and everything is dressed for a wedding, it doesn’t particularly feel “tentish” at all.

That’s important.

It means couples can get some of the atmosphere and flexibility of a marquee wedding without necessarily feeling as though they’ve simply hired a temporary tent for the afternoon.

It gives the celebration its own dedicated space while still benefiting from the facilities of an established hotel immediately alongside it.

There’s room to create an atmosphere

A wedding venue needs to do more than look good when it’s completely empty.

It needs to work once you’ve put people in it.

Tables.

Decorations.

Entertainment.

Food.

A bar.

Wedding suppliers.

And, of course, an entire room full of friends and relatives who don’t necessarily remain exactly where you’ve asked them to.

From what we’ve seen, the Oaklands wedding space works very well for that.

There’s enough character to the venue that it doesn’t feel like a bland function room, while still providing couples with plenty of opportunity to add their own styling and personality.

That’s a particularly good combination.

You want a venue to provide a good canvas.

You don’t necessarily want the canvas to dictate the entire painting.

The outdoor space adds another dimension

The grounds are another significant advantage.

The hotel promotes its landscaped gardens as part of its wedding offering, and we can understand why. (Oaklands Hotel)

There are pleasant outdoor areas around the property which can work nicely for guests during the day and also provide useful possibilities for wedding photographs.

You’re also away from the immediate noise and visual clutter of Yarmouth Road once you’re within the grounds.

That separation makes a difference.

You’re close to Norwich without feeling as though you’re celebrating beside one of its main roads.

Having accommodation on site is a major advantage

This is one of those things couples sometimes underestimate when initially choosing a wedding venue.

Having hotel rooms at the same location as the celebration can make life considerably easier for guests.

People travelling into Norwich don’t necessarily need to arrange transport elsewhere at the end of the evening, while close family and members of the wedding party have the option of staying on site.

The Oaklands has 37 rooms according to its current TripAdvisor listing, while Booking.com offers accommodation ranging from standard rooms through to suites and family rooms. (Tripadvisor)

And for anyone wanting to continue into Norwich itself, the city centre isn’t particularly far away.

Other wedding experiences seem positive too

We don’t like the idea of pretending our experience is the only opinion that matters, so we also looked at what other people have been saying.

And there’s an interesting pattern.

The hotel accommodation receives some mixed criticism — particularly around plumbing, bathrooms, occasional room maintenance and aspects of the older accommodation.

But comments concerning events, staff and weddings frequently become much more positive.

Recent reviews mention helpful staff supporting wedding guests, while previous couples describe positive experiences holding their own weddings at the venue. One recent restaurant reviewer attending a wedding particularly praised the venue and staff. (Tripadvisor)

Booking.com’s current overall score sits around 7.6/10, with its strongest individual scores including location and staff. (Booking.com)

That feels broadly consistent with our experience.

The Oaklands isn’t flawless.

But the actual hospitality and event side of the business appears to be one of its strengths.

Where we’d like to see improvements

If we were giving the Oaklands a little wish list, none of it would involve reinventing the venue.

That’s probably quite telling.

We’d like to see the driveway repaired.

We’d improve some of the directional signage around the accommodation.

We’d take another look at the comfort of the suite sofa beds.

And we’d really like to see the hotel’s plumbing and water-pressure issues properly addressed.

Some parts of the accommodation may also benefit from refreshing over time — something other recent guests have commented on as well. (Booking.com)

Those are genuine criticisms.

But none of them changes our overall view of its ability to put on a wedding.

Our verdict

Would we consider the Oaklands a good Norwich wedding venue?

Yes.

Very much so.

It has its rough edges.

The arrival could make a stronger first impression, some aspects of the accommodation could use attention and somebody really needs to have a conversation with that water pressure.

But once you start looking at it specifically as a wedding venue, there’s an awful lot to like.

The wedding space works.

The marquee feels like a proper venue rather than a temporary compromise.

The bar and restaurant areas are attractive.

The food is good.

There’s accommodation on site.

The outdoor areas provide useful additional space and photography opportunities.

And perhaps most importantly:

They seem to know how to put on a wedding.

That counts for an enormous amount.

A beautiful building doesn’t automatically make a good wedding venue.

The Oaklands feels like somewhere that’s had enough experience hosting weddings to understand what the occasion actually requires.

And despite those potholes on the way in, once you arrive at the celebration itself, we think there’s a very good wedding venue waiting at the other end.
